Mario Frecassetti from ALU-I has been invited to present “the trends in Microwave Backhaul evolution” in a plenary session of the Conference on Design of Circuits and Integrated Systems 2013, that will be hold in San Sebastian (Spain) the 28th November 2013.

Abstract:

In this increasingly connected world, the future Mobile Network, shall be able to support advanced functionalities like LTE-A and beyond. As consequence Mobile Network is experiencing an everyday growing for data exchange that should be provided at ever lower cost. For these reasons, the Backhaul Network, today converged into on a packetized infrastructure leveraging both IP routing and Ethernet media, is in front of some key challenges to cope with. Moreover, the Mobile Network infrastructure is looking at new architectures, such as "Fronthaul" and “Small Cells”, that add new challenges. Today, Microwave backhaul, thanks to its inherent advantages in term of cost-effective and scalable solution, is covering almost 60% of the backhaul pie, playing a predominant role in the Mobile Backhaul Network infrastructure scenario. To maintain its predominant position, Microwave backhaul solutions must be able to face the challenges posed by the Mobile network evolutions.

Objective of this talk is to identify these main “challenges” in the radio domain. We will try to provide an exhaustive picture, according to Alcatel-Lucent’s vision on the evolution of microwave, of the most important points that should be faced by a Microwave solution to satisfy the Mobile network needs remaining the first solution choice besides or complementary with other media in Mobile Backhaul Network sector, in the next decade.To do this, we will consider not only the mobile network needs, but also the aspects related to the available frequency spectrum, the rules and constrains coming from regulators, the inevitable spectral efficiency concept without forget the today important concept of energy efficiency.
