5G is the next frontier of innovation for entire mobile industry. The Radio Access Network (RAN) of 5G will have to respond to the increase in traffic volume, by increasing capacity and by improving efficiency in energy, cost and spectrum utilization. Deployment of these networks will emerge between 2020 and 2030, therefore the next decade promises breakthrough developments in several fundamental RAN technologies that will be required for implementing commercial-ready 5G network solutions.

FIA Athens 2014 constitutes the 11th consecutive conference of the Future Internet Assembly, which is a collaboration of more than 150 projects, aiming at strengthening European activities on the Future Internet to maintain European competitiveness in the global marketplace. The workshop “Radio Access and Spectrum innovations for 5G” within the Future Internet Assembly will look at technology innovations on the ultra-broadband wireless access being developed by European Commission co-funded research projects that combined will contribute to the capacity improvement and low latency required by the next generation of wireless networks.

In this workshop, Laurent Dussopt (from CEA-LETI, representing MiWaveS) and Igone Velez (from CEIT-IK4, representing E3Network) has given an speech about “Millimetre wave small-cell access and  backhauling for 5G”. They have explained that millimetre-wave links have the potential to provide the capacity and latency needed by the backhaul and small cells of the Future Networks. Moreover, SiGe technology is ready to be used in millimeter-wave links. MiWaveS and E3Network are building the millimetre-wave  transceivers for the future backhaul and small cells.
